Elizabeth Watters,  M.A.

My name is Elizabeth Watters. I am a Couple and Family Therapist (LMFT-T). As a couple and family therapist, I work with individual, couples, and families from all backgrounds. My goal is to meet each person I work with where they are, to support them in using their strengths to meet their personal goals. I have experience working with adverse childhood experiences and trauma, domestic violence, and life stressors that impact the mental health and relational well-being of individuals, couples, and families. My primary hope for therapy is that through building a collaborative relationship together, we will create an open environment where you feel safe, which will allow to you process through past experiences and to address your current therapeutic concerns. By focusing on your strength and resiliency, I believe you and your loved ones are able to overcome your struggles. Working together we can find solutions that work for you.

I grew up in Texas and attended Abilene Christian University for my undergraduate degree in Child and Family Services and Master Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I am currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Iowa, where I am pursuing my PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy.

As a researcher, I also believe in the importance of evidence based treatments and continuing to examine the impact of childhood trauma on mental and physical health across key developmental periods including adolescence, emerging adulthood, and older adulthood. I have spent the past three years conducting this research and working in the LGBTQ+ clinic providing ongoing therapy for individuals, couples, and families, as well as providing psychosocial evaluation for transgender individuals seeking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or gender reaffirming surgeries.

As a first generation college student and someone who grew up in poverty with adverse childhood experiences, I believe that therapy is a meaningful resource that can be helpful for anyone going through life stressors or experiencing mental health or relational problems. My approach to therapy is to integrate evidence based treatments including Emotion Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), Solution Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), and Bowen Multigenerational Family Therapy. I believe that every individual is the expert of their own lives. My primary goal is to work closely with you to help you identify your strengths and areas of resiliency to help you best overcome your life stressors and adversity and live life in a more fulfilling way.
